Boise State Volleyball: A Season of Triumph and Heartbreak
A Tumultuous Journey
The 2023 season for Boise State volleyball was a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with both triumph and heartbreak. The Broncos started strong, winning their first five matches and quickly climbing the national rankings. However, a mid-season slump saw them lose six consecutive matches, including a heart-wrenching defeat to rival Utah State.
Finding Their Rhythm
Despite the setbacks, the Broncos showed resilience and determination. They regrouped and won eight of their next nine matches, including a thrilling five-set victory over San Diego State. Led by dynamic hitters Riley Smith and Lauren Ohlinger, Boise State began to find their rhythm and regain their confidence.
A Heartbreaking End
As the season progressed, the Broncos faced increasingly tough opponents. They lost a close match to No. 13 BYU and were unable to overcome a determined Colorado State team in the Mountain West Championship match. Despite the disappointment of not winning a conference title, Boise State earned an NCAA Tournament berth. They faced No. 14 Washington in the first round and played with heart and determination. However, the Huskies proved too strong, ending the Broncos' season with a 3-0 defeat. Nevertheless, the Broncos left the court with their heads held high, knowing they had given their all.
A Season of Growth
While the 2023 season did not end with a championship trophy, it was a valuable learning experience for the Broncos. They faced adversity, showed resilience, and grew as a team. The lessons learned this year will undoubtedly help them in the future. As they look towards the 2024 season, the Broncos are determined to build on the progress they made this year. With a talented roster returning, they have the potential to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament and compete for a conference championship.
