In a decisive victory for Democrats, California Governor Gavin Newsom has survived a Republican-led recall attempt. On Tuesday, about two-thirds of voters cast their ballots in favor of keeping Newsom in office.

The recall election was triggered by a petition signed by over 1.6 million Californians, who were unhappy with Newsom's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues.

The recall effort cost taxpayers an estimated $276 million. Newsom said he will start to redirect money from cities and counties that don't show demonstrable progress in combating homelessness.

Newsom survived the recall election in 2021 and easily won reelection for governor in 2022. The recall election that could remove California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is coming to an end.
