Africa CDC to Declare Public Health Emergency of Continental Security
Africa CDC is poised to declare a public health emergency of continental security as early as next week in response to the ongoing mpox outbreak.
Since the beginning of last year, the continent has reported over 2,000 cases of mpox, including 100 deaths.
The agency is taking this unprecedented step to emphasize the seriousness of the situation and to ensure that all necessary resources are deployed to combat the outbreak.
"We are taking appropriate action to protect the health of Africans," said Dr Jean Kaseya, director general of Africa CDC. "Declaring a public health emergency is a necessary step to ensure that we have the resources and coordination needed to contain this outbreak."
Africa CDC estimates that the continent needs 10 million doses of mpox vaccine to combat the current outbreak. The agency is working with partners to secure these vaccines and ensure that they are distributed equitably.
The mpox outbreak is a serious threat to public health, but it is important to remember that it is preventable. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself from mpox, and it is recommended that all eligible people get vaccinated.
