The Taizhou Zoo in Northern China opened the new exhibit earlier in May, showcasing several dogs that had been painted black and white to resemble giant panda bears.
Videos of the so-called "panda dogs" have gone viral on Chinese social media, sparking outrage and criticism from animal rights activists and zoo visitors. Critics have condemned the zoo for misleading the public and for subjecting the dogs to unnecessary and potentially harmful treatment.
Zoo officials have defended the exhibit, claiming that the dogs are Chow Chows, a breed that naturally has a similar appearance to pandas. They also stated that the dye used is safe and non-toxic and that the dogs are well-cared for.
